It is best to consult a GP regarding IUD side effects. Intra-uterine device side effects can include short term discomfort after the IUD insertion. Many symptoms pass in the minutes after the procedure. For longer term risks and side effects please consult a doctor .
It is recommended that you have two consultations.
At your initial appointment, your Doctor will do a thorough gynaecological and general medical history. If there are any concerns such as abnormal or heavy menstrual bleeding then she is able to arrange investigations as appropriate. She will discuss with you management options and can also help talk through other hormonal or non-hormonal management options.
If required, cervical screening and sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening will be performed.
If it is decided that IUD is for you, then you will return on a separate day for the insertion.
