Reading & Writing Literacy Groups
Join Naomi, the Growlife Speech Pathologist, for 45-minute after-school weekly sessions to make some magic with sounds and words!
Designed for students in Prep - Grade 2, Word Wizards is based on the Sounds-Write phonics approach to reading and spelling.
Choose the group that's best for your child - initial code (beginner readers) or extended code (more confident readers and spellers). No more than 6 students in a group means plenty of individual support and opportunity to build social connections with other literacy learners.
Learning objectives
Growlife Word Wizards will build skills in recognising and manipulating sounds in words.
Using these foundation skills, students will be able to:
- Break down words into their component sounds to read them.
- Use their knowledge of phonics to spell words.
- Choose and read books independently with increasing confidence and enjoyment.
- Apply their phonics skills to other literacy activities, such as writing, comprehension, and vocabulary development.
Choose the most appropriate group for your child based on the descriptions below:
Initial code (For beginner readers)
- This code is designed for beginner readers and replicates what is normally taught in prep
- This code introduces the concepts and skills needed for breaking words into sounds and how to match them to letters (phonemic awareness)
Extended code (for more advanced readers)
- This code introduces additional spellings and sounds, words with multiple syllables and replicates what is normally taught in Grade 1 & 2
To enrol in the extended course, students should have:
- A solid foundation of phonemic awareness skills (breaking words into sounds, adding and deleting sounds)
- Should be confident writing simple words eg. Dad, pat, dog, hen
Word Wizards 2026 Dates
Location: Growlife Medical Sinnamon Park
Term 1 Dates: Weeks 2-10 of school term (9 sessions)
Mondays: 2nd Feb - 30th March
Times:
- 3.30 - 4.15 pm Initial Code (Beginners -taught in prep)
- 4.30 - 5.15 pm Extended Code (More Advanced - taught in Grades 1-2)
Cost
- Existing clients & new with referral/ NDIS: $45 per week. Total $405 per term (9 sessions, no GST).
- New clients (no referral/no prior assessment): $49.4 per week. Total $445 (9 sessions, includes GST)
*NDIS claims are available if communication and/or social skills building are part of the individual's plan
